About Puerto de la Cruz
Puerto de la Cruz is a municipality and a city belonging to the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands.
Puerto de la Cruz was the place where tourism began in the Canary Islands. In the year 1886, in this small port in the valley of La Orotava, the archipelago’s first sanatorium was located to welcome sick tourists. It was also the first Spanish tourist resort in Europe. Its popular food is octopus and anchovies.
It was also known as Puerto de la Orotava, because it is the main point of embarkation of the referred valley, although we have arrived at the end of the sixteenth century, it has also been called Puerto de la Cruz, because the new settlers were planted in the newborn pier a cruz.
Its inhabitants are known as Portuenses, and in some cases they are generalized as ranilleros, but it is also a name belonging only to the neighborhood of La Ranilla. It is located in the north of the island, in the valley of La Orotava, bordering the municipalities of Los Realejos and La Orotava. It has an extension of 8.73 km², being the smallest municipality of the autonomous community of Canarias.
The urban helmet is to 9 meters on the level of the sea, that is in the point of greater height of the municipality of the Mountain of the Frailes, next to the highway of the Mountain. The most outstanding height of the municipality is the volcano known as Montaña de la Horca or Las Arenas, with 239 meters of altitude.
